Elder Financial Abuse and Fraud Prevention: Whose Job Is It Anyways?

It is estimated that older Americans lose a staggering $2.9 billion a year to an ever-growing array of financial exploitation schemes and scams. Senior citizens are often vulnerable to financial abuse due to isolation, cognitive decline, physical disability, health problems, and more. To complicate the matter, scammers are exploiting the fear and insecurity people are feeling during the COVID-19 chaos and preying on our nation’s most vulnerable population. Early recognition of abuse is the key. Credit unions are in a prime position to identify and help prevent financial elder abuse, but we need to know how to recognize the signs and how to act upon them.

Speaker:  Lorri Gaither, SCMS, CUDE, CUCE, Senior Development Strategist, CU Evolution.

With over 20 years of experience in financial services, Lorri served as the Vice President of Operations and Engagement for the Cornerstone Credit Union League. Gaither’s team was instrumental in facilitating the growth and continued success of these credit union partners and their members. Gaither is a 2009 graduate of Southwest CUNA Management School and has earned several professional designations including the National Credit Union Foundation’s Credit Union Development Educator (CUDE) and Credit Union Compliance Expert (CUCE).
